Hi Everyone.

Firstly, I want to wish everyone the best for 2008 and hope that you all enjoyed the holiday season. Secondly, I don't know if it is me, but why has the diamond key disappeared from the front page of ffproject.com? It appears on the other pages but not the front page and I was wondering if there is a problem with my browser. Any suggestions welcome.
I don't know why this happened, but it seems to have sorted itself out now.

I've experienced it as well, Ibrihim. If you click on guestbook, you can find it, however. Wrong way go back also disappeared.

My browser still does the same thing when I select www.ffproject.com from my drop-down address bar, sending me to what seems like an older version of the homepage.
Typing in www.ffproject.com/index.htm brings up the current version of the homepage, as does the home link.
According to my understanding, when you type in an address such as www.website.com, the browser looks for and displays any page called .../index.htm as a default start page. It seems there are essentially two homepages, and our browsers are selecting the older one by default.
Since I am sure the webmaster would know if he had 2 versions of the home page on the host, perhaps the older page is from a previously used host? I seem to recall a change of host being mentioned at some point.
Not sure if what I am suggesting is possible or not.
Plausible suggestions, but not what was happening in this case. You are right that a similar effect was produced when I changed hosts, but this was back in 2005 and only lasted for a few days until the internet caught on following the change.

Originally, pages such as the home page were static : they existed on the server as HTML files. Each of them contained the entire menu, so any change to the menu - such as adding a new gamebook - meant updating all the files. The pages are now dynamic : they are created from scratch each time you request them.

Now, a consequence of this is that you end up with URLs like http://ffproject.com/cgi-bin/pg?f=index. To avoid breaking any links to the site I used a special file on the server that converts between the new and the old URL. Effectively, when you request http://www.ffproject.com, you are really getting http://ffproject.com/cgi-bin/pg?f=index.

All seemed to be going well, then all of a sudden this file stopped working for reasons that I don't understand. As a result, requesting http://www.ffproject.com was once again interpreted as a request for http://www.ffproject.com/index.htm. As I had not deleted the old static page, this is what the server provided.

And now, as I mentioned, the problem seems to have gone away again.

The reason you are seeing the wrong page now is because it is cached in your browser. Refreshing the page, or failing that deleting the cache should cure the problem.

Checking out the page info, you can see the older version of the webpage was last modified on the 3rd of March, 2007; whereas the current page was at time of writing last modified today.

I just wanted to thank all of you for these great stories you have compiled here. Im reading house of horrors and think its wonderful. I have been a fan of fighting fantasy way back in the 80s and to my suprise found this website. I cant wait to read all of your stories! Thanks again!

By the way,how about some pictures to add to them. I always thought they were great drawings in the originals. Surely there are some talented artists out there that can help out you guys? Well I just died, gotta go back to the start. (I knew I shouldnt have just followed the hallway all the way.)
I completely agree, and I would love for the site to have more pictures. At first I tried to find illustrations from the original gamebooks to match the text, but this is a tiresome process and by the time I got to House Of Horror I gave up on it. Also, although I realise the site isn't squeaky-clean in this respect as it stands, I don't really like to use artwork without permission (Martin McKenna is the only one I have been able to even contact, let alone ask if I can use their work).

But, yes, anyone willing and able to provide some decent illustrations for the gamebooks should certainly get in touch.

Are there anymore sites with online games such as these, or like these that anyone knows of? I've found several sites, but most of them require paper and pencil, which I don't use because I'm blind. Any suggestions?
These are my suggestions (they are all on the links page anyway). I don't know how accessible they are though :

http://www.spielbuch.net
http://www.fightingfantasy.org

Does anybody else have trouble viewing the amatuer FF books on the www.fightingfantasygamebooks.com website? My browser tells me I need a plugin, but can't identify which one.

Also, for those reading the text version of War of Deities; at the entrance to the dungeons (357) you are directed to turn to 147, which is a room full of caged birds. After examining the other references, I believe you are supposed to be directed to 98, which has you walking along a tunnel, and then opening a door, whereupon you are diected once more to 147. I believe 98 is the proper starting reference since it contains the words: Sword in hand, you open it, prepared to face the dangers of the dungeon.

I know some decent artists that can do these books some justice. Ive talked to two of them and they agreed to go on this site and read them through to get some ideas. They have other jobs now but the work I have seen them do are very quite good. One even used to read fighting fantasy when he was a kid! He was quite surpised about this being online. Its funny that Im thirty-five years old and havent even thought of these books in over twenty years. Now I feel like Im 15.This is great stuff and I hope I can help you out with some artwork. I will send you some of their work and you can decide if their good enough. If they are maybe you can have a poll with the other fans and vote for which book you would liked to have done? But Im getting ahead of myself. Back to reading your books! Its so much harder when you cant cheat.(And much more fun.)
Thanks very much - I look forward to seeing this. I should mention that the art budget of this site is zero, but they would be credited and get a link to their site if they have one.

As a general point, my view about the standard required is that since the standard of the writing is at least on a par with the original gamebooks, the artwork ought to be on a similar level too. But it doesn't need to be anything like as detailed.

Where would be the best forum to discuss the amateur books provided here?
The clue is in the question, but you could also try the Yahoo groups (see the links page). Another possibility is http://www.fightingfantasy.org.

Thank you for making this site. I love these books, I have 7 of them, except that mine are portuguese books. They were translated to portugues. Keep making these books, please. Over 18 millions copies were sold, you can't stop, we need more of these books.

Ulysses Ai? Any Ideas on how to find a, that is to get to a spot in a game without going all the way back to the start? I mean if you aren't Killed. Reference #? Also I've started working on a F.F. adventure. Will keep in touch, playing Hellfire, Outsider!, and House of Horror (a title which someone beat me too!). The site looks great! I've got some pics, One of a Creature of Havoc fr. Book 24 & an ancient Goblin Warrior. The Problem- I don't have the originals & I'm still learning to use the computer. All for now.
