Mr Sadler;

Thank you for this site! It's a productivity-killer but hey, we all need one of those, right? I'd actually never heard of Fighting Fantasy books before this - they're more of a British thing, right? - but I did grow up on text adventures and Choose Your Own Adventures, with a few random books that forfeited having d6s for flipping numbers in the corner. In fact, I think it was looking for the title of that series - it was something where you were a barbarian saving your girlfriend, absolute trash, but fun nevertheless - that I came upon your site.

I just finished 'The Trial of Allibor's Tomb', after prolific notes and deaths (I never said I was good at these things) and now I'm more psyched than ever to try one of the harder ones. (I found that mapping some of these is a bit of trial and error, though, especially the 'House...' one. I think I'm going to move onto mini-post-it notes soon.)

HI FF TEAM

IS THERE EVEN THE TINYINST CHANCE OF ANY MORE FF BOOKS BEING MADE??? BECAUSE WHAT WOULD BE REALLY COOL WOULD BE A REALLY HARD ONE THAT PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TO DO ON THERE OWN WITHOUT A TEXT VERSION? OR HAVE YOU DECIDED NOT TO MAKE ANY MORE? BUT IF YOU'RE NOT SURE PLEASE PLEASE DO.
PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE WITH A CHERRY, SOME GUMMIE BEARS AND A CHOCALATE FLAKE ON TOP!

Wouldn't providing a forum be a good idea? What the visitors are writing here reminds me much more of a forum than a common guestbook.

Think about it.

Etienne
You're right - but even at the best of times there probably aren't enough people posting messages to make it worthwhile.

Hmm... about the forum. Maybe you're right just now, but this place is getting more and more popular. I've got my own gamebook that I would like to post here exclusively. I would like to test it in a forum first before making it online. This would hardly be possible in a guestbook, but would certainly be something easely done in a forum. People could then critise, make comments or just provide hints and solutions for all kinds of gamebooks.

Anyway, here's a little preview as to what my gamebook is like, it's called SacreD.

You are possessed. Possessed by an Archangel. You have been chosen to
ba a host, as magical beings do not live long in the real world, (much
like a fish out of water). Being possessed allows you to perform
Miracles, magical feats of supernatural proportions...

Do you have what it takes to reach the Sphere of Infinity before your
opponent, the vile Gennowrath, host to the prince of Deamons?

Armed with your trusty two-handed sword "Soulfire", you enter the
deadly maze of Genndon, why has yet to claim a survivor.

_____________________________

I am looking for players for this game I've created called SacreD.
WARNING: This is not an easy quest and chances are, you might die a
few times before suceeding. Expect to fight monsters, solve riddles
and do a lot of dungeon crawling/exploration.

I expect players to post once a day.

The way the game works is similar to gamebooks (Fighting fantasy, Lone
Wolf, you name it). But it offers a choice of verbs instead of a
strict number of choices.

Players who survice this first adventure may save their character for
the next adventure.

Feel free to write, I will gladly answer any questions you might have.

This site isn't the only way to get your Fighting Fantasy books on the web. you can send them here:

http://www.advancedfightingfantasy.com/amateur1.htm

The site above has a lot more books on it than this one, but this site seems to be a lot more reliable.
Certainly it's a good idea for authors to send their books to as many sites as possible. I believe the one that you mention is at best dormant, though. I would suggest that any or all of the three Yahoo groups (see the links page) would be good places to try.

This site is really cool. it's got loads of free books!

http://www.projectaon.org/

Theyre Lone Wolf, not Fighting Fantasy, but I think Lone Wolf is better than FF anyway (and who cares, if theyre free?).

Yeah, I started one of those, Flight from the Dark. I'll finish it soon, you mark my words.

I like your site, but I think should add an option let people do the combat roles themsleves, so you can go back if you die unfairly. It'd also let you use luck in combat (I got killled because you removed that!)
Thanks. The luck in combat feature will almost certainly never be added, though you are not the first person to request it, it seems to be a popular rule.

You are however the first to suggest that the players should do their own dice rolls. The trouble with this one is that it makes the software virtually redundant, you may as well just read the book.

How do you die unfairly anyway?

1: Why won't you add luck? Do you hate that part of the rules so much? I think it adds stratergy to a combat
2: say your going up with foe with vastly inferior but you get screwed by the die and die because of it
It's not a question of hate, simply that the rule is (in my opinion) more trouble than it's worth. I suspect that it has virtually no bearing on the outcome of the vast majority of fights and I can't think of a good way to incorporate it into the user interface. And although the rule is quite simple in its basic format, authors often introduce variations, usually relating to different weapons.

I think that the possibility of getting screwed by the dice is a fundamental aspect of any game involving dice.

I'm sorry but I think that Luck is a fundamental aspect of FF and I've always missed its appearance on your pages, but I understand that it must be difficult to implement.

However, I disagree with your statement that, "I suspect that it has virtually no bearing on the outcome of the vast majority of fights", because I'm afraid to say that it most certainly does.

In fact, without the Luck attribute, most of the tough combats in most FF books, become a bit too tough (especially mine).

This is even more true in my second book where certain combats become all but impossible without being able to resort to the statistic in question.

Now, I personally have no knowledge of Java or anything like that, but I'm sure that someone who reads your pages does and I wonder if they would be able to help you implament said statistic?
Funnily enough I had Hellfire in mind when I wrote the previous reply - I think that it has a fight you can only win by using LUCK. I forget exactly what I did to get round it.

I stand by my general statement though, which I admit is based on gut feeling rather than statistical analysis. I can see that if your LUCK starts very high this may afford you a few extra points of damage against one opponent. But it doesn't have to fall very far to become useless, and you may need to rely on it outside of combat. I suppose it all depends on how readily you can regain LUCK.

I'm not ruling anything out in future, but realistically it's never going to be the highest thing on the list. I apologise in advance to all "LUCK in combat" fans.

Um... I'm not sure you want to know. On a lighter note, I just played Impudent Peasant. It was a really fun game book, but how the heck do you win? Any help would be apreciated.
