Is there any way of adapting the other Windhammer competition gamebooks into online play? Also, I've heard lots about the House of Hell book. Any way of doing that one, as well?
If their rules are close enough to FF (or a subset of FF) then yes. It's up to the authors though. Similarly, House Of Hell will only turn up here if Steve Jackson gives permission (and provides an electronic copy). I think this is unlikely, as that would effectively be giving away for free something that he is still trying to sell.

Maybe this site needs an FAQ section...
You're right, and as it's raining this morning I've made one.

After reading the short answer to the last question on the FAQ, I was wondering if there is any value at all in providing on the downloads page a 'gamebook submission template', where authors can cut and paste their text into the body of some of the code. Obviously the code that drives the gamebook engine would not be included. The purpose of this would be to make things easier for the webmaster, since the filled-in template could then be pasted as a whole into to rest of the code, and some adjustments made. In addition to identifying passages, the template could alow the assignment of variables to items, and changes in value to variables such as gold and STAMINA, etc.

Of course some hopeful author could go to the trouble of preparing their work for adaption and never end up seeing it adapted, but that's what disclaimers are for...
Not really. Providing a list of objects, or a heads-up regarding any unusual game mechanics - as you do - is very helpful, beyond that it's getting into the realm of asking the author to double as a programmer (and worse, a programmer using a very low-level language that I made up). Worth bearing in mind is the fact that there already are websites that offer this kind of thing, and the take-up is disappointing. I don't see any reason why there'd be any more enthusiasm for the idea here.

If time was unlimited, I think I would prefer to set up some sort of mechanism where people could create online gamebooks without having to resort to code at all. However, to get to that stage would represent a colossal amount of work, with no guarantees that it would ever get much use.

Hey are you guys thinking of making an offline program for your ff? It would be great! A psp homebrew sounds nice as well.

Just wanted to clarify one point--there will be some combat in this book, but not as much as in other books. And at least 50% of the fights you do get into can be avoided if you make the right choices. As for the puzzles, I'm not using many of the "If you have the XX, turn to XX" type of thing. Many of the puzzles will require creative thinking (or some lucky guesses) to solve. You will see what I mean when it is finished. That might not be especially soon--real life does get in the way sometimes--but once it's completed I will submt it here and you can all get a chance to try it out if you are so inclined.

Hi all

I'm thinking of asking Andy to replace my current 'Achaeid' with the version i entered for the windhammer competition. I feel that the latter version had fewer errors and typos, and generally flowed better. However, one thing i'm uncertain of is the segment on 'Talos' which i removed from the winhammer version to shorten it to fit the reference limit. Given that it doesn't really matter much to the story, and wasn't particularly exciting anyway, i don't feel the need to re-add it, but i'm just posting this to check if anyone feels that it needs to remain there.
OK I have uploaded your updated version.

Duffmeister:

From past experience the webmaster is happy to replace gamebooks on the downloads page with updated versions.
However, I wouldn't recommend that you spend too much time on this for the sake of minor improvement. I would say it all depends on how different it is. If by 'flows better' you mean that you have rewritten some of the sections or altered the decision paths in some way to improve the gamebook then that is certainly significant. So if you believe your windhammer version (with or without the Talos section) is significantly better, then please do send in an updated version.

Greetings,

I have a hard time finding software, which makes creation of a game-book easier on PCLinuxOS 2009.2

Given that DirectX games up to 9 can already be run on that with Wine, it is weird, that none of those fro Windows work at all.

Hints would be welcome. As I can't put my email here without one of those spam-machines driving me mad, please visit me at http://scribd.com/pauper

if you can give me a link or such. Thanks.

Sorry if anybody feels bothered by my note.

Bye!

Merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year to all. Here's to 2010 being another year that continues the resurgence of interactive fiction- in print, online, as download enabled files, and in formats yet to be invented. It's an exciting time.

Thanks Andy!

It must be said though that, firstly, these maps contain massive spoilers so only look at them if you really want to. And secondly, due to various changes I made to the books over the years, neither map is 100% accurate anymore, more like 95% or something if I'm being pedantic.

Oh well, they're still a small Christmas present to the FF community - happy Xmas everyone :-)

Hi,
Firstly, very nice site you have here! I like the look of the online gamebooks, I will have a go when I get time, possibly later on tonight even, and I'll give some feedback on here.
I've just a couple of questions:
1) I'd like to post up an adventure or two of my own, once you approve it, but with advanced rules eg spells, an extra characteristic like Honour etc - is this okay? Even if you dont want to put extra stuff on the Rules section here, how about if I include them in the preamble text at the start? (btw some are already on the official FF forum, in the AFF section, so if you're a member you can view 'em right now)
If the player has an offline pen & paper adventure sheet, then all they need is the online die roller.
2) Can I put links in the text of them?
3) I can draw, so may send you some art? If you like it, I could do brief illustratrions for other online adventures here, or anything you'd really like a visual rep for, just let me know and it should be fine.
Cheers!

CC
Thank you for the compliment, I'm glad you like the site.

As for your questions :

1) Submissions are covered in the Frequently Asked Questions section. The rules page isn't intended to be exhaustive, it's just a rough guide to the standard FF rules and how they are used by the site - I certainly don't update it to include every new rule anybody thinks of. Obviously in your gamebooks you can have whatever rules you like. I don't know what you mean by your last sentence.

2) Links to what? Anyway, I see no problem unless you are linking to something illegal.

3) If your work is of a comparable standard to that of the published gamebooks, then that would be great.
