In response to the admin's comment above: isn't that what tabs are for?
I'm not entirely convinced that this new comment system is a great idea, as it is. It seems to be getting lots of small, almost spammy comments, which are pushing down the more in depth and thought out comments made on this page. Perhaps creating a separate page for all of the 'book' comments to be collected would work? If you added a note suggesting it, people could still ask for help or give longer feedback on this page, where (possibly) more people would see it.
I see what you're saying but I'm inclined to wait a bit longer to see what happens. While I would much rather people like pheonix (who is singularly responsible for most of the small comments) wrote something worth reading, these kind of comments do have some value : they are feedback for the authors who otherwise have no way of knowing whether their gamebooks are even being read at all. A fan letter written in crayon is after all still a fan letter, and I'm sure that Ulysses Ai and Davy Stedham will/would be at least a little encouraged to see the complimentary messages posted, however short they are.
Some of the motivation for the guestbook changes came from the disappointing recent closure of the Unofficial FF Forum. I can't really complain, because I was part of the problem - like no doubt many others I read it from time to time but I never contributed, and the owner got fed up of the apathy and shut it down. It would be a pity if any authors gave up writing thinking there is no interest in what they are doing. So that's why I would prefer to see comments like pheonix's rather than nothing at all.
The plan was that the interesting conversations would take place in the separate threads, and the existing guestbook main page would effectively show the latest messages in all the threads. In the longer term I have vague plans to make threads for subjects other than the featured gamebooks, and the guestbook page might then become a list of threads (a bit like a forum). In the short term, maybe I should make the main guestbook page only show a selection of the more substantial messages. I will have a think about it.

Re: Guestbook changes
Personally I don't mind the short messages. I think the fact that a message has been left is of greater importance than the content of it. After all, a short message only takes a glance to read.
With the exception of some of the minor moderation on this guestbook, it is a public space and you have to expect all sorts. After all, I think it's a saying that your audience defines you.

@admin: I don't think I helped the thieves in the Beggars of Blacksand when I encountered the bug. However, I did get a reading from Madame star.
on the Diamond Key...
I like this book, there are lots of easter eggs which is nice, but...
SPOILER
the thing which I find a little unsatisfying about this particular book it is that, a lot of what happens before you get to the castle is irrelevant.
SPOILER
I could be wrong, but to achieve the best ending, you simply need to get the Revelation scroll and then use it at the appropriate time.
Yes, I am aware that discovering the scroll itself needs an item found on the first level (admittedly a well-hidden one) - but there isn't really any way in which any previous choices affect your ability to get the prereq item or the scroll.
But I guess structuring the book into a couple of 'mini chapters' makes it an easier book to finish than Return to G15-275 or Hellfire.
END SPOILER
There isn't a narrow critical path in The Diamond Key, but I wouldn't say that anything in there is irrelevant. Although in the online version, I have chosen one ending as the 'best' ending, in the original text, Ulysses states :
"Rather than being long, it simply has numerous paths and side adventures to follow. It is not designed to be difficult, but rather an enjoyable experience, as events develop according to your choices. There is no one way to succeed, and it will take some time for the ultimate purpose of the adventure to emerge.
There are 6 successful endings, all of which are valid. The ending in reference 1000 should be considered the ‘true’ ending only if readers want a challenge."
So anything that seems unnecessary with regard to reaching reference 1000 may in fact be vital in order to reach another of the successful endings. But I would say, most importantly, there's a lot in there that is simply entertaining and worth reading for that alone.
In time I will add the 'challenge' feature to this gamebook (as in Sharkbait's Revenge), and the challenges will be reaching each of the successful endings.

Great ending!

I just read the introduction of "The Diamond Key" & found it gives a pretty atmospheric introduction. Further I liked the idea that skilled attacks may do more damage & that one can wear armor to reduce damage. Farewell!

Always nice to know that we remain mortals... ;-)

Spectacular failure! After making it through the ambush, patiently handling the tax-clerk, even striking a deal with the orcish haggler I am defeated by what I know best from real life: Running out of money & being fired. x-)
Could one make the comments by gamebook played invisible or minimized to those who feel disturbed by it? I read the discussion, yet agree with Andy that authors may find it useful to get feedback from their players/readers.
The long term plan is that every message that was ever posted will be in one thread or another. They will be grouped in terms of the subject matter not where they were posted from. At the moment threads only exist for each gamebook, but I intend to create other threads for other popular subjects as well, and there will be a 'General' thread which will be a default repository for every message that doesn't fit anywhere else.
Until then, I don't see the problem. The guestbook isn't being swamped, even on a good day there's only about half a dozen messages so you don't have to visit too regularly to see everything.

the first battle I fought was essentially impossible, it was a pity, I was really enjoying it until then

I like the plot!

@ Andy: I found a typo. Paragraph 90: The woman smiles and shakes her head. "Please don't ask me any questions. I am trusting you will all our money. Please trust me." WITH!
Ulyssees, a quick query; is there an ending in which you stay with Kianmay instead of returning to your life as a merchant guard? And, if so, how does one achieve this ending?
Ulysses Sat Jan 4 04:24:13 2014
@Dustin:
Yes. It's the best ending in entry 1000. To reach it you have to:
SPOILER
Obtain an amethyst eagle amulet from somewhere on the lower level of the palace, get into the Royal Sorcerer's rooms on the second level (you may need a ring or a spell to do this, but I can't remember where you obtain those from), then in his study find the spell for manifesting one's true or hidden nature, then use it on the king at the end.
END SPOILER

Ulysses-
Thank you very much! And, may I say, it's a spectacularly excellent read. I 'wasted' away my weekend reading the whole thing. Well done indeed!
Dustin Sun Jan 5 00:55:25 2014
If anyone does know how to obtain the items Ulysses mentioned, I would be greatly appreciative if they would let me know. Thanks!

I can't get half of the objects in the game. Found the hiding places for most of them, just can't get them.
Ulysses Wed Feb 26 05:44:13 2014
@ Walker
I'm not sure what objects you are referring to here, or what is stopping you from getting them. if you can provide some more information, I may be able to help.

it took me an embarrassingly long time to get the page 1000 ending :(
Shadow Sat Apr 12 10:35:54 2014
Really loved the ending :D Kinda makes me wish there was something a little more after, or a sequel :P
Sunni Thu Jun 12 07:48:28 2014
*raises hand in triumph* Love the storyline though I felt the word version conveyed the characters' emotional journey more effectively, and the increasing desire to earn Kianmay's approval.
Only grouse I have is I spent minutes just wandering in circles around yhe palace before I gave up and drew a map. 3 down, many more to go!
