"hi every body does any one know where the battered black coloured sheild is? in hellfire"
SPOILER
It is in the pool of acid guarded by the Giant Centipede
END SPOILER

Giant centepide??
where do you find him???
???
Chadwick Tue Nov 23 17:03:38 2004
???, you're slightly ahead of me... but I just caught up. I have no Centipede or Pool of Acid on my map. Have you found it yet?
Phil, you know what would make this game easier? Some clues in the text, rather than just arbitrary object gathering.
So give us a clue about where our multi-legged friend can be found.
Phil Sadler Tue Nov 23 18:31:17 2004
Centipede:
SPOILER
It's on top of the giant wall
END SPOILER
Clues:
SPOILER
There are clues here and there but they might be difficult to spot. The Cyclops give you some quite obvious ones though
END SPOILER
Chadwick Wed Nov 24 12:01:07 2004
And remind me again how I get on top of the wall? I'm guessing I need some object that will make use of the holes in the corner of each brick, but I cannot work out which one.
SPOILER
I know it's not the Eye Ring, nor the Cats Claws (even with the Ninja Headband to complete the outfit)
END SPOILER
The Cyclops give clues? Presumably you don't mean the two just after Libra's Breath? They weren't very communicative at all. Is there another one somewhere else?
Phil Sadler Wed Nov 24 16:36:46 2004
The wall:
SPOILER
You need the cat's claws and the spiked boots.
END SPOILER
By the way, the online version is much tougher than the text version. The reasons being that you can't use Luck in combat and that, lots of times, if you don't have a certain item at a certain location you are not told.
In the text version Luck is very important and each combat takes it into account. Further more, the items you need are almost always reffered to directly in the text.
Phil Sadler Wed Nov 24 16:38:51 2004
The Cyclops:
SPOILER
They only give you clues if you use a certain item at the location you meet them. You have mentioned this item.

Chadwick Thu Nov 25 16:05:16 2004
Wll done ??? You beat me to it. Do me a favour though and answer your own question: what do I use to charge the armour?
??? Thu Nov 25 16:33:08 2004
Ahh well Chadwick my friend to charge the armor you must
SPOILER
use the golden chalice which can be found after beating the timebeast or the gargagentis
END SPOILER

SPOILER

END SPOILER
???
P.S I have finaly completed all the games and to answer my earlier question you have to
SPOILER

END SPOILER
Chadwick Thu Nov 25 16:45:53 2004
Hmmm. Not impressed with Hellfire. The only way to complete it is to collect random objects and to have a high Skill. Oh and don't forget your Potion of Skill.
Why the Potion of Skill? Coz come the end there's 3 big bosses to beat, all with double figure Skill (and yes I did use the Chaos Cross), meanwhile you have just fought a min 4 round battle where you lose a Skill each round. Without a Potion of Skill, you go into these battles at maximum Skill 9. You really need the dice to go well.
I'd always thought that the FF books were doable on even the lowest stats. Hard maybe, but doable. Hellfire is not worth attempting unless your Luck and Skill are both above 9.
Phil Sadler Thu Nov 25 17:30:48 2004
Bosses:
SPOILER
Well, you don't have to fight the Abomination, the T-rex or the Soul Demon. You do, of course have to fight the Timebeast, but there's a way to power yourself up this fight (even though it's tough to find.
END SPOILER
Anyway, writing one of these things is more difficult than you might think.
Further more, very few FF books were 'doable' on anything less than a skill 10, or maybe even an 11.
A lot of Hellfire isn't as tough as you might think because there are secret ways past creatures or ways to weaken them or power-up yourself. If you ever look at the text version you might know what I mean.
Anyway, thanks for playing my book, which I know readily admit was too tough for most :(
As you say, although the FF books would contain a paragraph stating that they could be completed with a low SKILL, that was quite clearly a lie. Similarly, of the gamebooks on this site, I would say that realistically only House Of Horror can be completed with a SKILL of 7.
It seems to me that this is a fundamental weakness of the rules of FF. It is always going to be very difficult for any author to allow for a player with a SKILL of 7 to succeed without making the fights too easy for a player with a SKILL of 12.
Personally I don't consider Hellfire to be "too" difficult. There are of course easier gamebooks on this site, but Hellfire is there for those who like a tougher challenge.
Phil Sadler Thu Nov 25 17:36:07 2004
Please remind me to proof read a post before I send it!
One last thing. I now realise, years after I wrote them, that the final door and the Trinitour himself involve too much 'trial and error'.
Ah well, I think I mostly got rid of things like that in the sequel (only to have 1 or 2 people decribe the text version as "A bit too easy.")!
Man, you just can't win with some people!
Chadwick Thu Nov 25 19:58:40 2004
Put my mind at rest then. How do I improve my chances with the Time Beast and the end bosses?
SPOILER
I know about the voodoo doll to get rid of one of them, and the Chaos Cross weakens the Trinotaur but what else am I missing?
END SPOILER
Phil Sadler Fri Nov 26 09:41:16 2004
"Put my mind at rest then. How do I improve my chances with the Time Beast and the end bosses?"
SPOILER
Well, as for the end 'bosses'? Firstly, you use the 'shape' potion in conjunction with the 'tiger's fur' to help greatly against the Timebeast. Secondly, you don't have to fight the Soul Demon at all (shake his hand). Thirdly, you don't have to fight the Night Horror either (use the wish ring on him). Lastly, there's no need to fight the T-rex (use the dispell illusion scroll on it)
END SPOILER
There are ways past other creatures too, as well as many other secrets to discover, but they're not easy to find.
Phil Sadler Fri Nov 26 09:45:31 2004
Forgot about the Abomination:
SPOILER
Remember the 'treasure' room at the start? Well, if you leave when asked to, you will find a mirror which you can use against the Abomination "A creature so foul, so disgusting, that if it were to see itself it would turn away in disgust". There are other clues verus other creatures too. For instance, the Night Horror (which you use the wish ring against) asks you, "I bet you wish I wasn't here?"
END SPOILER
??? Fri Nov 26 16:21:31 2004
One last question what exactly are the chances of getting the rusty gaultlets instead of the shield?
SPOILER
I know that you can use the dispel darkness spell to choose which one you get but I try to save it for the voodoo doll
END SPOILER
???
P.S Is there any way of opening the chest in the room with voodoo doll in it?
Phil Sadler Fri Nov 26 17:25:37 2004
Rusty gauntlets:
SPOILER
The chances are only 1 in 6, unless you use the light spell in which case you may choose which item you want to take. Yet another example of the online version being much tougher than the text.
END SPOILER
Open chest:
SPOILER
You can use the wish ring upon it, but you won't be able to use it to pass the Night Horror later on if you do (the ring can only be used once).
