was just playing this with my friend in class as we had spare time and he lasted longer than me

A little confused, I reached the shrine in the mountains and tried saying Salvir, Oramvir and Orravir, but all the names produced the muffled sigh. I made sure to spell all names correctly, can anyone possibly help?
It's Aramvir (with an A) not Oramvir. Could that be your problem?
Jordan Sun Dec 21 06:36:47 2014
Nice, seems I reached the optimum ending without the aid of gods after all!
Richard Sun Dec 21 09:48:27 2014
That is strange! They should work...

I really enjoyed "A shadow in the North", and the fact that you can

use your spells to get through the adventure with almost no combat

. The main character also had an interesting personality, and I felt I had a good grasp of his tactics and general approach by the end. Some more color to his back story would definitely be worthwhile to add eventually, rather than generic genius young mage. The branching factor did feel a bit much, in that I felt I probably saw no more than a quarter to maybe a third of the content in one playthrough. Looking forward to

the sequel, and hoping some of the knowledge and items can be carried forward in some manner.

@Amir
Thanks for your comments; I'm glad you liked the book. With regard to the branching, I wanted to add as much choice and re playability as possible, and in doing so went a lot further than most fighting fantasy books (by my calculations you'd need to play about five times to catch all the major encounters). As to the protagonist, there's one or two encounters in "A Shadow in the North" - the sequel - that reveal more about him, though I won't say more for fear of spoilers (BTW Andy, how far do you think you are for having it ready on the site?). If you liked my writing generally, I'd recommend the bird islands project, I've recently put up one or two short pieces there.
Amir Mon Dec 29 06:48:33 2014
Richard, thanks for the response. I'll make sure to check out bird islands, although I'm usually more inclined towards the longer pieces. I like the potential of the world you created in Shadow of the North.

And I enjoyed the encounters with the fire elemental and Heidi. The latter especially conveyed the general loss of hope and decency in the populace, even in someone who would otherwise probably be a heroine.

As you may be aware, the sequel, A Flame in the North, is now online thanks to the tireless efforts of this sites host. If you enjoyed this gamebook then I hope you will like it. I've aimed to deal with some of the problems of ASITN whilst enlarging upon the better elements, so all feedback is appreciated.

I found a bug... it is possible, under certain conditions, to warp to the marsh crossroads when

you fight the necromancer just outside Surlgrad, and you get the choice to kill him or listen to him

I believe I've fixed this now. Sorry for the inconvenience, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

An interesting story. Strong Aspects: Immersive world, beautiful use of English, various outcomes. Weak Aspects: Use of magic is somehow restrained due to loss of too much Stamina. I remember casting only lexicon and unlock and just one the Inferno Spell.
Final Comment: Can't wait to read the sequel (8/10)

Easily one of my favorites here. I loved the spell system with all the different effects and consequences o them

Loved the story. You can spin a great tale! I particularly liked that there was more than one path to follow to complete it (ie: missing one item did not render you unable to complete the story).
