Well, I may as well say that I'm going through Phantoms of Fear, 1 of my personal favs. Anything with vast dreamscapes, the warping of reality, surrealistic events, and all that, really interests me. I don't believe any of the locally written stories feature that sort of content
Does 'Midnight Deep' have multiple endings (ie: can you be a champion of balance)?
SPOILER
Also, is it possible to learn that you are Tiemuraz's twin and live, I won the adventuire once, but didn't reach that reference, except when death followed it.
When playing the gamebooks on this site recently, I've occasionally been forced to abandon an adventure due to its sudden breaking down when I move from one reference to another - the screen, rather than doing its usual immediate change from one paragraph to the next, instead turns black and appears to be taking a long time to load the next page, which never appears. I have seen this happen recently on various computers, and am wondering whether anyone else has experienced this, or else some bizarre curse has been placed on me as an individual, rendering me completely unable to ever successfully complete one of these gamebooks. Whatever the case, I'm hoping there's some way it can be solved. I'm sure others will agree that it is very annoying to be playing one of these brilliant gamebooks and suddenly find that you have to repeat it from the beginning, knowing that your adventure in fact did not legitimately end. Other than that, although I think I signed the guestbook a while ago saying this, I would just like to mention how much I enjoy these online adventures. Although there are many I have not yet attempted, the ones I have I have found wonderfully atmospheric, complementing many different adventurous feels. I think two of my favourites have to be House of horror and Bodies in the Docks - the atmosphere of the latter I found particularly chilling when i successfully played it about a year ago.
Have you tried refreshing the page when this happens, Vallaska? Alternatively, use your 'History' to find the bit just before the glitch happened and try it again.
I have so far failed to complete House of Horror, but I definitely agree with what you said about 'Bodies in the Docks'.
Oh, yeah, does anyone know where the sequel will be set?
Thanks for the advice Duffmeister. although it seems often to be the case that going back to the bit before the glitch will still lead to it happening in the same place, this has helped to dispatch the glitch and continue the adventure in just as many instances as well.
In regards to the Bodies in the Docks sequel, I didn't know there was one in the works? Is there anywhere I can find out more about this?
If you are fighting the Horned Monstrosity, it means you have failed to obtain any magical/trickery means to attack Darm. Try to obtain items such as scrolls and rings during the adventure, as these will give you more options at the end and you won't have to fight the Horned Monstrosity at all.
The Diamond key took me six months to write (and was indirectly responsible for me failing some of my subjects that semester :P ) WWGB took only a few days. Based on my work between these extremes, it seems the amount of time for gamebooks is an exponential rather than linear relationship. That is: a 100-reference gamebook will not take twice as long as a 50-reference gamebook; but much longer. Of course, the complexity of the game system and story path are other factors. In general, I would say that a 400-reference gamebook of normal format would take about a couple of months of actual writing time (working an hour or two for 60 days). This would exclude the planning stage, which will vary in duration according to the idea itself. 'Normal format' means no complex rules, and standard passage lengths.
Perhaps my answer in the end is: it depends. Which I know isn't very helpful. If you are asking this question to assess your own production rate, I would say you are quite slow (too many gamebooks all at once?); but then again, it could be well worth the wait. :)
As I remember, I spent about three months on House of Horror . My current book...well, I guess you could say it took me 6 years.
I began right after HOH. That was a mistake, because I quickly got burned out. I completed about 120 sections, hit a massive case of writers block, put my folder in a closet and forgot about it.
In February, I decided to have another go. I spent 5 months writing the rest of it, and the last month typing it up. I'm almost finished.
I agree with Ulysses. Duffmeister, if you have several ideas, just concentrate on finishing one gamebook and put it out there.
Has anyone ever heard of the Horror of Craggen Rock and the Forest of Dreams? These are online FF gamebooks and can be found on the Tales of Yore website
Anyone who has looked at the links page of this site in the last couple of years will have heard of these gamebooks. I suspect they are very well known indeed by now as Nathan Page's site has existed for such a long time, it certainly predates this one by several years.
