The Dark Domain
I was so excited to read a new Phil Sadler’s book. Death trap and House of Pain were excellent in my opinion.

This is the only one of his books I won’t be finishing. There are some good ideas: the Talisman of Death and the encrypted message is one for example and I appreciate the effort to make battles more interesting although the FF battle system would require a complete rewrite in my opinion.

I thought the constant teleportation created a disjointed result. It felt more like an exploration of various horror classics than a unified, coherent story to me. It’s really too bad.

I also thought some of the fears were unfair. Without getting into spoilers, you would sometimes be confronted with a fear impossible to see coming. Some of the temptations were also very arbitrary and unpredictable, making my experience more frustrating.

On the other hand, it’s well written. My only gripe is the constant *blink* thing which I was already exposed to in House of Pain. It’s used so often I got tired of it but this might be because I saw it many times in House of Hell.

Also, I was disappointed with the amount of choices. There are many places to visit but each place offer very few choices (sometimes only one). I felt more like I was constantly teleported from place to place than choosing my own adventure.

It’s too bad as this is clearly a labor of love by the author.

It would nice to have somewhere to write reviews of the various downloads available.

my jobby has been on here since 2003 (eternal thanks and giri to Andy) though it was about ten years later I discovered this commenting facility. as for meeting might be easier to pick a time (a Tuesday or Thursday evening perhaps) then a location.

A Saint Beckons
Hi Robert,

I am pleased to inform you that my translation of A Saint Beckons has been selected to run a nonprofit French IF contest called "Yaztromo Prize".

However, the selection of a translated IF is valid only if the original author - in my case, you - approves it.

Please let me know if you agree to a translation of your gamebook running such a contest.

Regards,

Benoît

A Saint Beckons
Hi Benoit,
Thanks for letting me know. Very interesting about the Yaztromo Prize - if you wish to enter a French translation of A Saint Beckons into the competition, that's fine. All I ask is that my name as the original author is kept on the title page. Let me know how it goes!
Regards,
Robert Douglas.

Hi Robert,

The translation can be read here: http://litteraction.fr/livre-jeu/l-appel-de-la-sainte (click on the PDF link).

As you can read, your name is written in bigger characters than my Lone Wolf-inspired pen name :)

Regards,

Benoît

Sorry, I usually work on weekdays, and will consequently not be much fun on those evenings...

How about weekends?

I actually agree with Ulysses regarding a panel deciding the winner, as this makes the competition somewhat fairer.

I submitted Golem's Gauntlet in a year with 22 entries, and as it was placed on the bottom of the reading list (just how it happened - no one's fault) most people never read it at the time.

If people make the effort, I think all entries should be read and judged on their respective merits equally.

I remember that. Didn't Wayne cycle the entries around so they had a different order each day?
I'm not sure who could be on the panel who would give it the time.

Re : Gamebook Solutions, I've written out detailed solutions for Hellfire, Riders of the Storm, Trial of Allibor's Tomb, Outsider, Shrine of the Salamander, Rise of the Night Creatures, House of Horror, and some others. I just didn't post any of those online because I didn't know if the creators of those gamebooks would be okay with it.
