Are you any better now

I'm much better, thanks! Tested negative twice, on Sunday and Monday.

To be honest, the virus didn't affect me much. I had incessant hiccups and vomiting in the first two days, but that was it. Starting from the third day, everything felt normal, other than the obligation to stay at home.

There was no fever, no breathing difficulties, no aching, and no chills.

Here's the 'About the book' bit to wet your whistle:

About the book

This book is mainly inspired by two others: Dante’s Inferno and The Great Divorce by C. S. Lewis. The Inferno gives it its hellish edge. The Great Divorce gives it its City. I suppose that it could also be considered as a sort of spin-off from House of Hell or my own House of Pain. It certainly contains all of the demons, undead and gore that those ones do. All it lacks is the Fear stat (and the fact that it’s not set in a house, although an entire city would certainly be the next step). Also, this book is its own thing, separate from all of the above and with my own violent swing at things.

It’s taken about 5 years to write and is the most complex thing I’ve done so far. I’ve even learnt to Hyperlink for his book, which is something that I wasn’t even sure you could do in Word. Excel tables have also been implemented within the adventure too here and there and some of these are very long indeed. Don’t worry, they are for reference only and you don’t have to read them all. What’s more, I’ve taken the unusual decision of actually implementing the odd Internet Link and even a single Google Drive link. Strange I guess, but it will all help you the player and should limit the ‘housekeeping’.

This adventure its own language to learn ala Creature of Havoc. It has a new statistic: Sanity. It has a MaGuffin to protect like Talisman of Death. It also has a lot of new stuff in it such as choosing which stat you want to test on occasion. See if you can spot the other references to other books and perhaps other people and, dare I say it, pop culture.

The combat is now more involved. Not just Instant Death and Deadlock, but now Deadly Counterattack. This should give weak characters an edge and always gives a player a chance against even very strong enemies. To further help I even gone as far as to help the player avoid many of the instant deaths, but as you can imagine, it’s not as simple as it seems.

Talking of enemies, there are fights in this book which push the FF system about as far as it can be pushed and still be considered FF. Anymore and it would be something else or just be too complex. This means that most of the fights in this book are actually interesting, not just ‘Here is a goblin. Here is his skill. Here is a boring fight.’

This has now been edited, play tested and gone through with (warning: cliché) a fine-tooth comb. However if there are any errors that have crept in this 169,000 word document (surely one of the biggest FFs ever?) please let me know. I’d be especially interested in anything major such as an enemy with no skill score or, even worse, a ref with the wrong number and so on. It really was very difficult indeed writing, researching and balancing this book.

If you want me I’m at foadironATgmail.com (email obfuscated; replace AT with @). I’m also at the many FF groups such as www.ffproject.com/gstbook.htm and fightingfantazine.proboards.com/ as well as Facebook groups. I use this page for many of my references: fightingfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Fighting_Fantasy_Wiki_-_Titannica. I use the following source materials: Out of the Pit, Beyond the Pit and Return to the Pit.

For those interested in statistics, here are my books compared:

Hellfire:
499 refs
14 Unavoidable fights
42 deaths
Revised: 54 times
Editing time: 8 hours 25 minutes (I wrote it by hand and then typed it in, so a short time here)
Pages: 150
Word count: 50257

Riders of the Storm:
400 refs
16 unavoidable fights
37 deaths
Revised: 266 times
Editing time: 62 hours
Pages: 168
Word count: 64667

House of Pain
499 refs
19 unavoidable fights
39 deaths
Revised: 966 times
Editing time: 713 hours
Pages: 177
Word count: 80059

Deathtrap
499 refs
15 unavoidable fights
28 deaths
Revised: 781 times
Editing time: 334 hours
Pages: 197
Word count: 79995

The Dark Domain
499 refs
22 unavoidable fights?
27 Deaths?
Revised: 1785 times
Editing Time: 560 hours
Pages: 390
Word count: 169,000

The reason this last one has the question marks next to the fights and the deaths is because it’s more open than the others and so I genuinely had to take an educated guess as to the true number of unavoidable deaths and even instant deaths. You’ll understand what I’m saying after you’ve played it a good few times.

A word to the wise here. This adventure is violent, that’s for sure. It’s probably also a bit distressing and even a tiny bit taboo here and there. So be warned.

Happy Reading!

Just thought I'd drum up a bit more interest by posting a few Instant Death paragraphs that never made it into the book:

Instant Death 1
You enter the almost pitch-black cubical with the utmost caution, painfully aware of the slight hint of some deeper shadow you saw earlier. A sudden flicker of lightening outside lights up this dirty little place for a second, but that second is just enough to show you that there are two shadows on the wall, yours and – then the split-second of light fails and you feel yourself being grabbed and stabbed in the back. You flail about madly but can touch nothing, only shadow, or in this case living shadow, a creature composed of the stuff and that has no physical form – A Shadow Stalker.
Regardless of what has just happened, you fall to the floor after being stabbed thirteen times and lay still amongst the filth whilst the merest glimmer of light gradually fades from your view and the world goes dark forever...

Instant Death 2
The claw marks make you uncomfortable but the teeth marks make your skin crawl, and yet still you walk into almost impenetrable blackness. Then something unfathomable happens. You quite literally walk into a physical wall of darkness, one that slightly shudders as you make contact and then opens wide in front of you, filling your vision completely with impossibly large teeth. Those teeth belong to the uncanny creature known as Living Darkness.
They are also the last things you will ever see...

Instant Death 3
Uneasily, you creep through the burned door, skin prickling, hand on sword, only to jump out of your skin as the door slams shut behind you leaving you in utter darkness. That darkness explodes into light as a fire appears in front of you and three shadowy women make their presence known behind that fire. You try to focus on them but find it impossible because no matter how much you try to look at them they always seem to be in the corner of your eyes.
The three woman walk towards the fire and grow with each step until they are surely taller than the entire structure you are in. Each woman raises a hand and points at you with fingers so long you assume them to be an optical illusion.

Then an unseen force takes control of your body and you watch in horror as it marches you closer and closer to the fire, all the while the three woman looming gigantic in the corner of your eyes, their pointing fingers longer than your body.

Closer and closer.

Hotter and hotter.

Your screams cut through hell just as the flames touch your skin. The City hears your screams and acknowledges them, trapped as you are with the Mothers of Darkness...

Instant Death 4

Your army lays defeated. What’s left of the enemy army begins to shamble towards you until you are completely encircled by their gruesome remains. Now they start to close in on you. Of course you draw your blade as the circle of free space around you diminishes and the hoard march closer to you. The last thing that goes through your mind is a rusty sword through the back of the head...

Instant Death 5
An alarm goes off as you punch in the wrong code. The ground shakes and instantly opens to form an utterly gigantic mouth. This mouth licks its teeth and smiles as you fall screaming into it, never to be seen again ...

Not the first time I've heard that for the Living Corpse and so I decided to do my own version for *warning blatant plug incoming* The Dark Domain:

This loathsome atrocity is horrible even compared to the abominations you’ve already faced. It is made of intestines, innards and other guts, along with various lumps and chunks of meat to form a loosely humanoid figure with two arms, two legs, three heads, two tentacles, a main body and a tail! Even that is nothing compared to what happens next: the ‘body’ suddenly bursts apart to leave all eleven of its component parts hanging in mid-air and darting to and fro as they all attempt to attack you at once!

Luckily for you, this is a weak creature and its body parts will only hit you for 1 STAMINA point of damage. Moreover, if you Test your Luck after you lose an Attack Round and you are Lucky, you may halve all the damage, rounding down, for that entire round, even if many of the body parts managed to hit you. So, if, for instance, you lose a round and five body parts hit you for 1 STAMINA point of damage each, you may Test your Luck and try to get that down to 2 points (half of 5 is 2 when rounding down).

LIVING MUTATED CORPSE SKILL (see below) STAMINA (see below)

2. Left leg SKILL 5 STAMINA 1
3. Right leg SKILL 5 STAMINA 1
4. Tail SKILL 5 STAMINA 1
5. Main body SKILL 5 STAMINA 1
6. Left Head (must ‘kill’ this part) SKILL 6 STAMINA 1
7. Middle Head (must ‘kill’ this part) SKILL 6 STAMINA 1
8. Right Head (must ‘kill’ this part) SKILL 6 STAMINA 1
9. Left arm SKILL 5 STAMINA 1
10. Right arm SKILL 5 STAMINA 1
11. Left tentacle SKILL 5 STAMINA 1
12. Right tentacle SKILL 5 STAMINA 1

Fighting this loathsome fiend is not as easy as it seems: all of its body parts will attack you at the same time, but you may only attack one of them per round (chosen at random by the same number you roll whenever you win an Attack Round, then consulting the table above). If you defeat a body part it will continue to stay in the fight but will no longer try to attack you, but it will still dart about like mad and confuse you. However, should you accidentally hit one of these 'defeated' body parts - you would have wasted that hit!

The only way to truly beat this foe is (unknown to you) to destroy all three of its brains which are of course housed in its trio of heads. Once you have defeated these three body parts, the rest of it will simply flop to the floor and the fight will be won in your favour.

If you throw a double-six during this fight when calculating your Attack Strength you can still use your Instant Death move as usual because you would have skewered all three of its heads at once!

I forgot to include this bit:

For this fight you may like to use this mystical portal to help you:

drive.google.com/file/d/1bCNk9NW4mUJtLXInmyPd8pHMXjwQy3Zk/view?usp=sharing

This strange device will allow you to fight enemies automatically. Unfortunately, you must still resolve Instant Death, Deadly Counter Attack and Deadlock yourself. This curious portal/device may be especially useful for certain multi-foe encounters. Unfortunately, this odd contraption can only be used to fight ten foes at a time, and yet this fight is with 11. You must roll the dice for the eleventh yourself.

Just spotted a mistake:

375
The large tramp has his back to you and is scrutinising the skull as you approach him, except when you do the entire place falls silent and a million eyes all look at you, but now they all have skulls in their hands. A great well of noise springs up as the entire unimaginable multitude speaks in one voice, “I am Legion.”

Your heart drops like a stone.

“To better understand your enemy you must know who he is.”

The landscape starts to warp and shift from one reality into another: swirling colours, a rush of air, cold then hot then nothing, then everything. The world melts and is reborn as something else, somewhere else. Out of that somewhere, something, will come for you. Anything is possible with this ancient foe.

LEGION SKILL (see below) STAMINA (see below)

Roll 5 dice and add 1 (for a total of 5-30) and then consult the following table. If you don’t like the number rolled you may Test your Luck and if Lucky you may roll again. You may continue to do this as long as you have at least 2 LUCK points left.

That final paragraph up there should read:

375
Roll 5 dice and then consult the following table. If you don’t like the number rolled you may Test your Luck and if Lucky you may roll again. You may continue to do this as long as you have at least 2 LUCK points left.

In other words you do not add 1 to the total.

Just had an interesting conversation about this book. I'm posting it here but snipping spoilers:

Good afternoon.
Pedro

If you have time, I would like to have a word with you about your last book. But only when / if you want, of course.
16:20
You sent
I'm at work right now, but later on will be fine (I'm at a summer camp and times are variable).
18:22
You sent
I'm here now
19:11
Pedro

Ok. How are you ?
You sent
good today, and you?
Pedro
Good good.
Pedro

You recall someone that did some reviews from some of your books, in the past, named Condutas?
You sent
I reckon I do.
Pedro

That's me mate.
You sent
oh!
You sent
Very nice
Pedro

And I have a load of questions about your last book.
You sent
sure
Pedro

It's ready and complete as it stands, I assume?
You sent
it is
Pedro

for example, your code:
Pedro

After over 25 deaths, I code the book code done. IP spoilers]
Pedro

This was the translation. I think there might have been some letters mistakes there, for "X" and "Z"
You sent
looks good apart from 'No ezit.' Should be no exit
Pedro
Ok, that was close. I need to figure where the "X" is then.
Pedro

How am I suppose to translate this into "IP spoilers]" ? I killed my head but I have been unable to see the connection
You sent
IP spoilers]
You sent
IP spoilers]
Pedro

(Yeah, I check the entire book and still don't understand the connection there mate)
You sent
Maybe my riddle/puzzle was too obscure?
Pedro
IP spoilers]
As that what we were supposed to do?
You sent
IP spoilers]Pedro

Shiittttttt
You sent

Pedro
yeah I would never figure that shit out by myself, at all.
Pedro

Nobody else talked with you about the code?
You sent
Not many people have talked about the book at all.

You sent

I guess you had to keep fighting The Undying each time you failed? I'm interested how far you could have got.
Pedro
oh, painfully deaths soon after. I never made it to the end at all (not using op stats, 12-24-12)
Pedro

with broken op stats, then yes
You sent

Pedro

this book is not harder than Hellfire, at least. not the obvious amount of items needed
You sent
I tested the book (of course I know it well) and could definitely do it with 9/9/18. But then I know it back to front.

You sent

nothing is harder than Hellfire
Pedro

the second question is the lich queen riddle.
You sent
Ah, that was a real bastard I know
Pedro

It's the same problem. I tried words like "destiny" "soul" "future" "stuck" Added them all together and no logic there
You sent
Do you mean:
You sent
IP spoilers]
Pedro
Yes that riddle. the lady has a IP spoilers] that you might or might need later to turn a fight with one of the IP spoilers] easier

Pedro

never got the IP spoilers], however
You sent
Hmm. I think you have the wrong end of the stick with this difficult riddle. The riddle itself contains IP spoilers]

You sent

If you want I can tell you exactly, or give you a clue(s)
Pedro
Oh? I thought we had to found a word, convert the word for number and then go to IP spoilers] (yes, I checked the entire doc to see where the bloody number was)
Pedro

So is basically add and subtract the numbers on the text to go to IP spoilers]?
You sent
Nope. Much worse than that.
Pedro
then I have no clue at all
Pedro

this book is way harder than Riders of the Storm, that's for sure
You sent
IP spoilers]You sent

I thought Riders was too easy.

You sent

Even when you know what to look for, the riddles is still a right bastard.
Pedro
damn wtf.
Pedro
yeah... it's not obvious at all. And you are right, Riders is way easier.
Pedro
I still prefer your house of pain, for the reasons I said in the past.
Pedro

But this one, your last book, had this 2 riddles that I honestly couldn't figure out, like, at all.
You sent
In my defence she does say this:
You sent
“Then listen well because I am about to recite a riddle to you and it will contain a secret code that I will then ask you for. This code consists of a string of numbers. Take those numbers and then add them all together to come up with one final figure and then tell me what that figure is.”
You sent
And the IP spoilers]is

You sent

useful but not essential
Pedro

she did indeed but I never look at this like a "IP spoilers]" string of numbers puzzle but as a "found the right word, convert to numbers, add them all up"
You sent
Hmm.
Pedro

I mean, in hellfire you had a puzzle like that, answering it and go to the number. In riders, I don’t think you even had a hard puzzle, just like knew where to summon the Trinitour
You sent
Perhaps I should've made it clearer? Difficult to judge between giving clues and giving too much.
Pedro

nah, probably not. well not for this one. The hellfire code, yeah, definitely should put somewhere in the book we are supposed to see the first letters of each sentence
You sent
I'm still haunted by people telling me Riders was too easy. Never again!
Pedro

Hellspeak
You sent
Not too sure about just outright telling the reader
Pedro

Well, there is also the fact that a lot of people played Riders using the stats from the final of hellfire... you could potentially go there with 13-28-13 stats
You sent
Holy moly

You sent

I never knew that. I could easily do Riders on 9/9/18
Pedro

If you play fighting fantasy online, on the site, your hellfire adventure, you can continue it after the end and go straight to Riders of the storm
You sent
Holy cow. I never knew that.
Pedro

Live and learn
You sent

Pedro

I think thats it.
You sent
ok
Pedro

Your book was definitely harder than riders of the storm and harder than house of pain
You sent
I agree. Maybe too hard.
Pedro

but mainly because I never figured those bloody two riddles
You sent
I can't stand easy books.
Pedro

the last one is almost a dead sentence, I mean, -1 stamina in each paragraph is a pain
You sent
Which bit is that?
Pedro

I mean, winning your dark domain without knowing the code by the end of the adventure
You sent
Ah. Well, that was the idea really - that you SHOULD know the code.

Phil Sadler
Fri Jul 29 17:48:22 2022

You sent

Originally that bit was an Instant Death like so:
You sent

An alarm goes off as you punch in the wrong code. The ground shakes and instantly opens to form an utterly gigantic mouth. This mouth licks its teeth and smiles as you fall screaming into it, never to be seen again ...
Pedro

SHIIItttttt
You sent
So, believe it or not, I WAS giving you a small chance

I don't mind a lot the ancient memory and put information that you have to die to get for another walkthrough. Well, 1 year ago I honestly didn't like you having that in Deathtrap
Pedro

But in a way, I understand now it means the book can be more complicate with stuff like
You sent
I like a bit of meta in my old age
Pedro

I mean, it forces the player to actually explore *everything and then more* before he finally founds the right path
You sent
I do like to hide the path

You sent

Too much dumbing down these days
Pedro
I said in Deathtrap? I think even in House of pain you had that. The third questioner question was impossible to be answered by a "one run in true path" person.
Pedro

But I have to agree with you there, it makes the book harder and that's a good thing
You sent
no easy street from me

You sent

And these days I do like a sort of 'Questioner' at the end of a kind of Final Gauntlet. It makes things more exciting I reckon.
Pedro
yeah agreed
Pedro
well, that was all mate.
Pedro
I don't really had a review written, not unlike in the other books
Pedro

but besides that two riddles that, for the love of god, I never figured...
You sent
Cool conversation. Would you mind if I put it on the Fight Fantazine webpage, minus swearing and spoilers?
Pedro
the book is surprisingly opened and balanced
Pedro
I mean, is there any review in all of this? not really, more like comments.
Pedro

But shoot it up, for sure
You sent
Thanks. Let me know if you ever fancy a quick review, because that sort of thing really helps.
Pedro

AND ASK THE PEOPLE IN FIGTHING FANTASY ONLINE TO CREATE A TOPIC FOR EACH OF YOUR BOOKS!
You sent
I reckon I will!
Pedro

It took me easily some weeks until I notice you have written a book
You sent

Pedro

tell them some users (Me, Condutas) said you deserve more exposition
You sent
I'll ask
Pedro

You sent

Pedro

anyone said anything about your deathtrap one?
You sent
Quite a few things here and there

You sent

seems quite popular

have a good one mate.

Just like the Living Corpse I tried to 'fix' above with my own Mutant Living Corpse, I'd thought I'd try my hand at the Changeling with my own Unholy Changeling. I did this because it's my opinion that the Changeling, whilst a really good idea, was never that intimidating because of the limited range of its transformations. Anyway, here's my version:

At first glance the nursery is ‘normal’. It’s full of toys, games, books, coloured pencils and has little beds up against the walls. On those walls are cheerful posters of children’s films or of comic characters. On second glance you note that whilst there is a teacher here and that she too is ‘normal’, she is clearly caring for and playing with small boys and girls that are quite obviously dead.

Your heart wells up inside of you but when you try to explain to the woman her mistake she just starts to cry and hugs the little bodies ever closer, her tears falling onto their corpses. Another crying sound grabs your attention and you observe that in one of the tiny beds a child, no more than a baby, is still alive and crying its little heart out! Instinctively, you stride over to it and attempt to calm it only to reel back in horror as you see that the baby has a man’s grinning face!

This face suddenly contorts and the whole body starts to swell alarmingly as the ‘baby’ undergoes an incredibly rapid change into a much larger creature.

UNHOLY CHANGELING SKILL (see below) STAMINA (see below)

To find out what this Unholy Changeling becomes you must roll 8 dice and consult the table below. The number you roll will equal the number of the monster on the chart underneath. The monster you roll will only have the statistics of its normal counterpart but not any of their special abilities.

If you do not like the creature you roll you may Test your Luck and, if Lucky, roll again. You may do this as many times as you like as long as you have at least 2 LUCK points.

With this in mind it is suggested that intrepid heroes should avail themselves of the following mystical portal: https://rolz.org/ Once at this strange magical place you should simply input the number of dice you wish to roll and then take note of the result.

If you defeat the creature, add 1 to your SANITY, but your fight is not yet over.

The new creature crashes to the floor in a spray of blood, but it doesn’t stop moving and before you even have time think, it’s old body has ‘burst’ open to reveal a new one beneath its skin! You must fight the thing a second time! However, at least you have ‘killed’ this thing once and this gives you a bit of hope: add 1 LUCK point.

Some ideas for locations in the book that never made the cut:

chemists (people buy and take terrible
poisons/plagues). +1L. +6Stam. + all skill?

clothes shop (people eaten/torn apart/tortured in cubicles. Scary mannequins: real people? They move? Very ugly? Crying?

comic shop (grown men are laughed at by their children).
