Been playing Hellfire for a long time and it is an amazing game but still cannot find the rusty gauntlets. Can anyone help? |
asgardian Tue Jan 3 13:59:15 2012 |
Best to wait for Phil to answer. Yes, it is highly enjoyable, if perhaps a tad too hard. The only thing that really detracts from the adventure is the silly encounter with the humans and the snake. If the adventurer instead found an idol they had to sacrifice to for benefits then that would make more sense and be in keeping with the tone of the story. |

Bill. For the rusty gauntlets you need to do the things in the above spoiler, this will get you the things you need. Then you need to travel west after the

Thanks for the rusty gauntlets help. But now I have a follow- up question. Once I meet the Trinitour I am asked for Plate Armour but I believe if you defeat the Bloodbeast and obtain the Armour then you are unable to travel to get the timespell or am I doing someting wrong? |
Phil Sadler Thu Jan 5 11:09:51 2012 |
I don't think the beast stops you from using the spell? Just use it where you get the other spells and follow the above spoilers. You can use the time spell anywhere, mind you. |

Hi, I have some questions about the layout of Hellfire because I think I've found two problems in the game. The first is just inconvenient for a player who rolls a low Skill character, the other is game-breaking because it

It's difficult, but it was certainly possible at one point. It's not inconceivable that I could have broken it by mistake though - I will have a look. The item mentioned in 1) is definitely obtainable though because I have just checked. |

Michael, sorry to hear you are stuck. Phil doesn't appear to be on hand, so here's the part of the solution in question:

I have the entire solution, and from memory mapped it out from the online version. Hope it helps. |

Thanks for encouraging be to recheck my first question. I found the item this time,

asgardian, thanks. I'm going to try and run through the game again with your solution. I expect it'll reveal something I've missed,

Michael, no problem. I can send you the entire solution if you are still stuck. From memory I think the only thing that is a tad unfair about that whole sequence is knowing when to use the Time Spell. Here's the first part of the adventure that gets you off to the right start:

Note that you ALSO need a Skill/Luck of 12 and must take the Potion of Luck. All in all an enoyable adventure that just needs a few slight tweaks. |
Michael Schreiber Tue Feb 7 21:46:14 2012 |
I did finally complete Hellfire. As a purely challenging dungeon adventure it can really stomp even a character with high stats easily, but I feel that there's too much emphasis on the crushing difficulty at times with the abundance of instant death traps. If we're talking about tweaks I'd suggest slightly more mercy, stealing Stamina or Skill for mistakes is easier to swallow than dying

I wish there were more narrative. I love a gamebook that can provide strong storytelling as well as fun game mechanics, but Hellfire is really meant to be the end-all-be-all of dungeon adventures and its style suits it well. I enjoyed the challenge. |
asgardian Wed Feb 8 15:52:17 2012 |
Glad you also enjoyed it Michael. As for the tweaks, I felt it just needed:

In Hellfire, on section 263, the text indicates that the Spider Man is mean to kill you if he hits you at all. I was hit and nothing special happened. Is this a bug? |
Yes it's a bug. I have fixed it now and it works as in the original : you test your luck to see whether you live or die. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. |
Phil Sadler Tue Apr 24 07:16:21 2012 |
You can avoid death if you are lucky. |
Phil Sadler Wed Apr 25 09:15:26 2012 |
OK Andy, I spoke too soon. Thanks for fixing it. |
mcsmith Mon Apr 30 11:34:45 2012 |
thanks Andrew. Where can you found the bone bracelet in hellfire? And is it true that when you are at the portcullis with the rat/snake/devil/demon signs every choice leads to death? And the guy who wants to trade spells wants to trick you so that you lose your unidentified spell? |
