Above The Waves The first adaptation I have done of a Zachary Carango gamebook is ready to play. Even after decades, the dreaded pirate known only as Kurtz still terrorizes travelers on the southern sea. The blood he's spilt could stain the very ocean, and more lives are claimed every month. Even as his death toll rises, many search for Kurtz. Whether for bounty, justice, or fame, these brave souls search for a true demon. Stuart Lloyd had this to say about it : http://virtualfantasies.blogspot.de/2011/12/windhammer-review-part-4-above-waves-by.html. Grekgun, Bug Fixes Also, I have added Grekgun by Tammy Badowski to the downloads page, and I have fixed the bugs in House Of Horror reported by pi4t a few days ago. |

This might be obvious, but did anyone notice the parallels between the new gamebook Above the Waves, and Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now? |
Adam E. Johnston Mon Apr 23 09:38:13 2012 |
Oh yeh, for sure Haoie. A couple of things that jumped up at me were "Marlowe" on the plane (protagonist of the book), Kurtz (anatagonist of the book) and of course the idea of venturing into the unknown jungle, as the novella describes the journey into the Congo basin. It was a fun gamebook, but I think it would help to have a bit more backstory in the beginning (ie, how the world is now dominated by aircraft and has a post apoc feel, despite modern technology- like the nuclear reactor- existing). Still, lots of fun, a great read. |

And another broken link, I'm afraid: Above the Waves section 13 doesn't link you anywhere, making it impossible to proceed. From the text, this doesn't seem intentional. |
And many months later, I've finally fixed it. Thanks for bringing to my attention, sorry to you and anyone else inconvenienced. |

My mind led me! I have finshed in 5 rounds! |

"Not willing to abandon your friend so easily, you pick up a heavy stick and charge the jaguar. The beast is distracted by your attack and turns its attention to you. With a deadly pounce the cat lands on your chest tears a deep gash in your flesh. Lose 4 HEALTH. You are dead." I had 10 health here, and my Krav Maga Super Koong Foo skill chosen! |
I can't reproduce this. Are you sure that you're not mixing up the initial and current values of HEALTH? |

Andy it was the only fight AND I had 10/10. Thank you! |
In that case, I don't know why it happened. I can't see anything wrong in the code, and as I said I tried playing to the point you describe and all was well. If you see this again, could you email me the URL? |

@ Andy: I guess you already fixed it. This time the loss of 6 Stamina due intro was calculated & shown on the character sheet! 10/10 down to 10/4 then dead to 10/0 :D |
I've done nothing. It's good that it seems to be working now though. |

Believe it or not, I experimentally completed this game clicking on random options... I can't believe it either!... |

This time I played this properly and I enjoyed it. There perhaps a bit too many walls of text, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. |

Really interesting. So glad I completed it as this is my first one to complete, because in all of the other one's, that I've attempted I have died. So really happy and enjoyed the story. |

Pretty good. It ended unexpectedly quickly, but not before I had some good plays and deaths. The multiple character and skill options are always a refreshing change. Some more battles would be ok, but the play is pretty good as is. Grade: 96 |

Great gamebook! The only thing was I didn't actually encounter any fights. |
Alice Mon Nov 6 11:43:39 2017 |
It was well written and had lots of options which lead to different stories. |

Enjoyed that, thanks. |

was this short or did i make all the right choices |
paul Tue Mar 19 11:45:27 2019 |
why did i pick up a stick to fight the jaguar, i have a machete and hand to hand skills? |
Justin franklin Tue Feb 4 22:36:59 2020 |
What a pointless game! I mean totally. I must have made 10 choices, purchased items I never had the need to use and it was just reading a story with minimal choices. Next thing it says congratulations you've completed the game? It wasnt a game where you make choices with cliffhangers, it was very to the point and boring. |

Never realized there was a book using Virtual Reality series rules here. Hope there's more of these. |

Good story |

This would have been so, SO good if it had more refs to flesh out each episode/location (perhaps as few as 50 extra would have done the trick) and used the Skill system of either Soul Tracker (optimally) or The Word Fell Silent (easier to implement, though probably less suitable than Soul Tracker's for a "combatless" gamebook)! As it is, this Windjammer entry still boasts an unusual setting with some clever writing and a great cast of characters. Other than what seems like a bug or a typo (more on it below) there's a nary a bug or a poorly written moment, there's very considerable variety that's both background-dependent and skill-dependent, and even two viable endings. Alas, the way skills are all-or-nothing means that if you get the right combo, you'll see the run dominated by stretches where they carry the character on their own, without even needing your input. (The one other time on here I recall something like this was in Any Port in a Storm.) Now, the aforementioned bug/continuity-breaking typo seems to be this:

The other typos I spotted.

Regarding reference 9, I think you're right, it should just say Richard rather than Marlowe and then it all makes sense. Thanks for pointing these things out. |
